This role is responsible for supporting the identification, management, and oversight of risks within the People & Culture (P&C) function, operating as part of the first line of defence. This role ensures that the P&C team complies with our risk management framework, relevant regulatory obligations, and internal policies - all while enabling effective and safe P&C practices across the employee lifecycle. The Senior Manager – 1st Line People and Culture Risk focuses on effective risk management across people and culture which support to ensure our people more broadly can deliver what matters to our customers.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify, assess, and document risks across P&C (e.g., recruitment, performance management, payroll, diversity & inclusion, employee relations).
  • Develop key controls with risk owners to mitigate identified risks, ensuring control design is effective, appropriate and aligned to our risk management framework.
  • Monitor control effectiveness through regular control testing and assurance activities.
  • Manage risk and incident registers related to P&C, ensuring accurate reporting and timely resolution of issues.
  • Carry out annual obligation and risk management declaration for the Trustee.
  • Support the development, review, and governance of P&C policies and procedures in line with regulatory and legal obligations (e.g., Fair Work Act, Privacy Act, APRA CPS 230/CPS 520, Workplace Health & Safety).
  • Provide timely and accurate risk reporting and insights to the P&C leadership team and relevant risk/governance forums.
  • Champion risk awareness and capability uplift across the P&C function, delivering targeted education and training.
  • Embed strong risk culture and awareness into P&C decision-making, projects, and transformation programs including championing the effective embedding of change driven from our line two risk team
  • Partner with project teams to provide proactive risk advice on strategic workforce initiatives (e.g., restructures, systems implementations).

 

What you will bring

  • Relevant proven experience in risk, compliance, or governance within financial services.
  • Sound knowledge of operational risk frameworks and three lines of defence model.
  • Strong understanding of P&C processes and related regulatory environments (e.g., APRA, ASIC, Fair Work, Privacy, WHS).
  • Experience with risk registers, risk management frameworks, issue/incident management, and policy governance.
  • Experience identifying, documenting and testing internal controls.
  • Qualifications in Risk Management, Human Resources, Law, or a related field.
  • Understanding of regulatory expectations such as APRA’s CPS 230 (Operational Risk Management) and its implications for P&C.
  • Advanced ability to research, interpret and advise on the practical application of complex legislative requirements and reforms
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communications
  • Advanced relationship & stakeholder management skills including influencing, challenging, negotiation and achieving through others
  • Proven ability to operate effectively with the ambiguity associated with a large, complex and dynamic business
