Lead QA Engineer
SYDNEY, NSW, AU, 2000 MELBOURNE, VIC, AU, 3008
- A true QA tech lead role without people management responsibilities
- Exposure to AI-powered testing and MCP-based approaches that are still rare in most organisations
- Greenfield initiatives alongside meaningful modernisation work
The opportunity to join our team
We currently have a new and rare opportunity to step into a true QA technical leadership role at a time when we are reimagining how quality engineering is done. In this role you will help shape how testing evolves across our customer-facing platforms, combining strong fundamentals with genuinely cutting-edge approaches such as AI-driven testing, Playwright MCP, and autonomous test agents.
Rather than managing people, this role is about setting direction, coaching other testers, and lifting the maturity of QA practices end to end. You will work closely with our Engineering Lead, to trial, introduce, and scale modern testing capabilities that allow teams to work smarter while dramatically improving coverage and confidence.
If you are excited by greenfield work, new technology, and being trusted to lead QA strategy without the burden of people management, this role will genuinely stand out. The focus is on building robust, full-coverage testing suites that balance automation, manual testing, performance, accessibility, and AI-assisted approaches, while playing a critical coaching and mentoring role for testers and engineers across the team.
- Lead the design and evolution of QA strategies covering unit, integration, end to end, performance, and accessibility testing (and others where relevant)
- Drive the adoption of modern testing tools, with a strong focus on Playwright and Playwright MCP
- Explore and implement AI-assisted testing approaches, including natural language test creation and autonomous test agents that generate test reports
- Balance innovative approaches with strong traditional testing fundamentals, including manual and automated regression testing
- Build and maintain high-quality automated test suites using TypeScript and complementary tooling
- Champion performance testing using tools such as Locust, with Python-based test development
- Coach and uplift other testers and engineers in QA best practices, tooling, and testing strategy
- Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, improving how tests are executed, reported on, and maintained
What You Bring to This Role
To succeed in this role, you will bring deep QA experience combined with an appetite for innovation.
- Significant experience in test automation, with strong hands-on capability
- Strong experience with Playwright, or the ability to transition from Selenium or similar frameworks
- Experience or exposure to Playwright MCP, AI-driven testing, or emerging QA tooling is highly regarded
- Good working knowledge of TypeScript and modern JavaScript-based frameworks
- Working knowledge of Python, particularly for performance testing tools such as Locust
- Strong experience across multiple testing types including unit, integration, end to end, accessibility, and performance testing
- Experience working with APIs, including REST and authentication concepts
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and Git-based workflows, ideally using GitHub Actions
- Experience in regulated environments such as financial services is advantageous but not essential
- A curious mindset, with a genuine interest in learning, experimenting, and sharing ideas
